About The Apple Barn York

About The Apple Barn York“Our village sits on highest ground with open vistas all around”.

The Apple Barn is a beautiful, recently renovated old apple store, set in the centre of the village adjoining The Cottage, the owner’s home, and sitting peacefully next to Holtby church.

Parts of The Cottage and Apple Barn date back to c1600. Many years ago The Cottage was the village pub until the church next door purchased it and turned it back into a private house.

Holtby is a small traditional village steeped in history and untouched by development. The Scandinavian origin of the name (Holt-by means Coppice village)
indicates that the Vikings were once here; the Domesday Survey of 1086 – where the name is given as Boltbei – lists it as among the King’s lands.

The Yorvic way, a 65-mile recreational path, skirts the village and there is a network of 6 separate public rights of way within the parish of Holtby which, together with bridleways and country lanes link Holtby to neighboring villages making it an excellent area for walkers and cyclists.

About The Apple Barn YorkThe nearest pub is less than a mile away and is well known for its excellent food, the nearest local shops are 2 miles away in Dunnington village.

There is an extremely good bus service passing through Holtby village, which runs every 20 minutes into the centre of York and back.
